Benghazi – The Libyan Government, headed by Osama Hammad, issued a strongly-worded statement on Tuesday, warning of the deteriorating security situation in the capital, Tripoli. It accused the “outgoing government” of inciting war and seeking to drag the capital into chaos through irregular military mobilizations.
In its statement, No. (23), the government asserted that these movements aim to “threaten the security of civilians, cause widespread chaos, and spread terror among the population.” It stressed that any targeting of public institutions and vital facilities, especially those near residential areas, constitutes a “serious violation of civil peace and a direct threat to the lives of citizens.”
The statement strongly criticized what it described as the “negligence” of the international community and the “farcical play” of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), holding it fully responsible for the deteriorating situation and its slide into violence as a result of “fragile negotiations” that have worsened matters.
Concluding its statement, the Libyan Government outlined several key points, affirming its firm commitment to protecting the security and residents of the capital, Tripoli. It also called on all national parties to renounce the language of escalation and resort to political dialogue as “the only way to overcome differences.”
The government also appealed to the people of the western cities, urging them not to “push their sons to be fuel for a war that only serves the narrow personal interests of those clinging to power.” It reiterated that the security of the capital, Tripoli, and its people represents a “top priority,” and announced it would continue to work with all active parties to maintain stability and civil peace in the country.
