Hanane Al-Sharif, head of the Libyan Organization for Human Rights, announced the organization’s welcome for the efforts made. These efforts came from the National Committee for Monitoring the Conditions of Prisoners and Prisons. They led to the release of several detainees. Their legal statuses were regularized. Al-Sharif considers this a significant step. It advances justice. This is especially true for those acquitted. It also applies to those with release orders from the Public Prosecution. Additionally, it includes those who completed their sentences.
Al-Sharif explained this in a statement to ‘Libya Al-Hadath’ channel. The statement was also reported by Al-Marsad newspaper. She said the committee’s work involved reviewing inmate files. It included visiting detention centers. It also verified the legality of arrest procedures. This helped correct many legal irregularities. These irregularities had persisted for long periods.
She added that the organization praises the role of competent authorities in eastern Libya. These include security and executive agencies. They cooperated with the committee. They enabled it to perform its tasks. This was despite difficult conditions. These conditions resulted from political division and security challenges. She also noted that support from security and military authorities was crucial. This came especially from the General Command of the Armed Forces. Their support clearly helped the committee succeed quickly. This was despite the complex situation in the country.
Al-Sharif affirmed that the organization will continue working with the committee and relevant parties. This ensures the continuation of this process. She pointed out that a number of detainees are still awaiting status regularization. Human rights organizations will play a role in pressuring authorities. This is to complete this file.
She clarified that the human rights file should be separate from political division. She emphasized that human rights work should encompass the entire country. It should not be limited to one region.
She concluded by stating the organization’s hope. This step should extend to western Libya. She considered the achievements a significant step. This is especially true given the political and judicial challenges facing the country.
