“We live in a complicated moment, in which negative circumstances risk causing the migration issue to explode,” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, warned on Thursday.
Speaking at the forum “Southwards: The European Strategy for a New Geopolitical, Economic and Socio-Cultural Season in the Mediterranean” in the Italian city of Sorrento, Tajani cited in particular countries such as Tunisia, Libya, Sudan and the Horn of Africa, but also Syria, Lebanon and the Middle East, where the “negative situation pushes millions of migrants” to leave their countries.
The chief diplomat then clarified that “immigration is now an international issue”, not a problem that only concerns Italy and that “cannot be solved only at the Italian level”.
“Italy cannot take on such a heavy burden,” the minister specified.
