Representative Jaballah Al-Shibani issued a warning to the Minister of Local Government in Tripoli and the Mayor of Misrata regarding the health and environmental risks posed by the landfill in Tawergha, which receives waste and refuse from the city of Misrata, including waste from factories and hospitals.
Al-Shibani pointed out that the burning of waste at the landfill causes suffocating and possibly toxic smoke that threatens the health of citizens, prompting many of them to consider leaving the area.
The representative explained that these risks have also been reported to the Attorney General and the World Health Organization, stressing that the continuation of the situation reflects the marginalization and deprivation of reconstruction, compensation, and stability that Tawergha suffers from.
Al-Shibani noted that he holds the concerned authorities legally responsible for any health effects that may befall the city’s residents, stressing that the Libyan judiciary will be the legal recourse for recovering their rights.
He also called on the notables, wise men, and sheikhs of Libya to intervene in cooperation with their counterparts in Misrata to close the landfill as soon as possible, emphasizing that the continuation of the situation represents a danger to humanity, respect for human rights, and noble morals.
