A report published by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) addressed the participation of the Libyan national team in the Afrobasket 2025 tournament held in Angola, and considered it an unsuccessful participation after exiting the first round without any victory.
The report explained that the Libyan team lost its last match against Guinea with a score of 83 to 55, officially losing any hope of reaching the quarter-finals, as its journey ended with three consecutive defeats. The report indicated that Guinea’s superiority was clear from the beginning to the end of the game, with a difference of up to 31 points.
The report shows that Sufian Hamad was the most prominent player with 15 points, while the rest of the team suffered from offensive and defensive weaknesses, especially as Guinea succeeded in imposing its style and relying on three-pointers. Libya scored only one three-pointer in the first half through Nassim Badroush.
The report mentions that the Libyan team scored only 6 free throws out of 16 attempts, in addition to missing many opportunities, while Guinea showed great superiority in shots from behind the arc with 11 out of 28.
Coach and player commentsThe report quotes head coach Sam Vincent as saying: “We will return home and meet with the federation to discuss the future of the team, until then I can’t talk about my coaching future.” Player Sufyan Hamad expressed his feelings, saying: “This was our first participation in Afrobasket and we will now focus on the World Cup qualifiers to improve our performance.”
