Lieutenant General Khairy Al-Tamimi, director of the Libyan National Army (LNA) commander’s office, met with US Embassy Defense Attaché John Smith on Thursday to discuss potential US support for cooperation between Libya’s military bodies, according to an Embassy statement.
The statement explained that the two military leaders focused on “how the United States could back joint efforts between Libya’s institutional forces” in their talks.
“We stressed the significance of continuing work towards unification under a democratically chosen administration able to safeguard Libyan autonomy and bring regional stability,” Smith commented after the meeting.
According to military sources, General Al-Tamimi outlined a number of areas for US assistance in professionalizing Libya’s armed forces, modernizing equipment, and facilitating coordination between rival military factions.
The meeting signals warming ties between Libyan national forces and US diplomats after years of division. Both sides appear open to more engagement to support Libya’s stability.
