Acting Minister of Local Government, Abdul Shafi Al-Juweifi, announced Saturday that a wide-ranging training program will be rolled out as part of the ministry’s 2025 plan to strengthen municipal governance.
The initiative is designed to build the administrative, legal, financial, technical, and technological capacities of newly elected mayors and council members, enabling them to carry out their responsibilities more effectively and respond to local development needs.
The announcement came after preliminary results were released for elections in 26 municipal councils held on August 16. Al-Juweifi congratulated the winners, calling the vote an “electoral celebration” that reflected broad democratic participation under both the list and individual systems.
He also praised the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) for its efficient management of the polls, which saw 165,159 ballots cast out of 228,061 registered voters — a turnout of 72.4%.
