An analytical report discussed the worsening of modern slavery in Libya. The English-language Nigerian newspaper “Peoples Gazette” published this report. This occurs despite the long-ago end of the slave trade in Africa.
Al-Marsad newspaper followed and translated key analytical insights from the report. It clarified that Africans remain vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation in Libya. This also occurs across North Africa and the Sahel region. Some cases amount to actual enslavement. This happens through modern foreign networks. These networks mimic historical slave trade caravan systems.
The report noted that UN investigations documented markets for irregular migrants. It also documented detention centers. Africans are sold there for paltry sums. These amounts sometimes do not exceed a few hundred dollars.
The report added that these individuals are forced into labor. They are also held for ransom. They are subjected to torture. Sexual violence occurs in both official and unofficial detention facilities.
