Over 1,100 Migrants Intercepted and Returned to Libya in One Week: IOM

Tuesday, September 16, 2025 National 1 Min Read
IOM condemns excessive use of power against migrants in Tripoli

A total of 1,161 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya between 7 and 13 September 2025, according to the latest weekly maritime update from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The interceptions occurred off several coastal cities including Tripoli, Zuwara, Azzawya, and Derna.

IOM reports that 17,402 migrants have been intercepted and returned to Libya so far in 2025, including 15,155 men, 1,516 women, and 586 children, with gender data unavailable for 145 individuals.

Since the beginning of the year, 456 deaths and 420 people missing have been recorded on the Central Mediterranean route.

In comparison, 21,762 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya in 2024, and 17,190 migrants in 2023.

IOM reiterated that it does not consider Libya a safe port for migrants.

Would you like me to make it sound more like a short press release (formal and neutral) or a news article (slightly more narrative)?
