Over 18,000 migrants arrived in Italy since beginning of 2022, says government

Italian Interior Ministry said 18,841 migrants have arrived on the coast of Italy since the beginning of this year, Aki news reported.

The Ministry indicated that 371 migrants arrived two days ago, which brings the total number of arrivals by sea since the beginning of May to 8,080.

It added that 18% of the migrants were Egyptian, 16% Bengali, 12% Tunisian, 11% Afghan, 11% Syrian, 7% from Ivory Coast, 5% from Guinea, 3% from Iran and Eritrea and 2% from Sudan, pointing out that 3,689 people are still under identification process.

According to the Ministry’s statistics, Italy witnessed during the same period of 2021 the arrival of 14,412 migrants, and 5,024 during the same period in 2020.
