The U.S. State Department Counselor, Derek Chollet, said his country shares Libya’s concern that the events in Niger could destabilize the region, “particularly as Libya is in the midst of a delicate UN-facilitated political process aimed at unifying the country through free and fair elections.”
Chollet said he spoke with the Tripoli-based government’s Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush about the situation in Niger.
“I reiterated U.S. condemnation of efforts in Niamey to seize power by force & our call for a restoration of constitutional order,” he pointed out.
“The U.S. partnership with Niger is based on a shared commitment to democratic governance,” according to the U.S official.
