Tripoli – The Central Bank of Libya’s management announced a new service. It will launch QR code payments at various points of sale. The service will begin next Sunday. This is part of the bank’s digital transformation plans.
The announcement came during an extensive meeting. Governor Naji Mohammed Issa chaired the session today, Tuesday. Managers from several banks attended. These included Al-Jumhouriya, Al-Sahara, Al-Wahda, North Africa, and National Commercial Banks. Managers of electronic payment companies were also present. Relevant Central Bank department managers attended.
The meeting reviewed key performance indicators. This covered January 1 to February 28. Indicators showed significant progress in e-transaction volume. The number of points of sale sharply increased. It reached approximately 170,000 in just two months. The number of active cards totaled 5,531,507.
ATM card operations recorded 4,047,780 transactions. Their total volume was 2,235,176,369 dinars during the same period. Card operations via points of sale reached 91,931,265 transactions. The total volume for these was 11,735,207,353 dinars.
Bank application subscribers numbered 4,300,280. The total operations executed via electronic applications reached 43,304,277. Financial transactions through mobile applications totaled 47,899,278,948 dinars.
The meeting revealed a notable increase in instant payment operations. These services included LYPay and OnePay. Their total transactions reached 44,638,566,521 dinars.
The number of e-wallets was 187,335. Their acceptance points reached 6,096. Wallets processed 89,808 operations. The total transaction volume was 8,211,379 dinars.
The Central Bank Governor reiterated the importance of streamlining procedures. This ensures citizens and companies can access e-banking services. He stressed periodic performance improvement. This will meet increasing demand. He praised all efforts and initiatives. These expanded and developed e-payment systems. They also solidified digital transformation.
