Washington – US President Donald Trump affirmed his intention. He plans to maintain the blockade of Iranian ports. This will happen if no agreement is reached with Tehran. He also hinted at the possibility of not extending the ceasefire. The ceasefire is set to expire on Wednesday.
Trump made these remarks to reporters. He was aboard Air Force One. He stated the ceasefire “might not be extended.” He added that “the blockade will remain in place” regardless.
In a related development, Iran reopened the Strait of Hormuz on Friday. This followed a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon. Iran had previously threatened to re-close the strait. This threat was contingent on the continuation of the American blockade.
Regarding the chances of an agreement, Trump expressed optimism. He said, “I believe it will happen.” This is despite ongoing fundamental disagreements between Washington and Tehran. Previous rounds of talks in Pakistan also failed to make concrete progress.
Trump clarified that Iran will not impose fees on ships. These ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran had previously made this demand during earlier negotiations.
In a post on “Truth Social,” Trump indicated Chinese President Xi Jinping was pleased. He was happy about the reopening of the Strait. Trump noted their upcoming summit in Beijing next May. He said it “could be special and perhaps historic.”
Trump also confirmed Washington’s plan to end the war. The war erupted on February 28. This plan includes transferring enriched uranium stored in Iran to the United States. Iran’s Foreign Ministry had previously stressed its stockpile “will not be moved anywhere.”
