Turkey does not believe that a new interim government in Libya is helpful to the country, and will continue its support for the government of the incumbent Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told the press on Wednesday.
This comes in the aftermath of the Libyan House of Representatives’ decision to name former interior minister Fathi Bashagha as the country’s new interim leader. The incumbent, Dbeibeh, has rejected the parliament’s moves, saying he will only relinquish power after a national election.
Erdogan told reporters that he maintains a “good relationship” with both Bashagha and Dbeibeh. However, his country will side with Bashagha as he believes that forming new government is not in Libya’s interest.
“Turkey will continue to provide possible support to Libya to reach the elections,” he added.
