Acting UN envoy to Libya Stephanie Koury said she discussed with a group of political, social, and media personalities elements of UNSMIL-facilitated political process, including addressing long-term conflict drivers while navigating political, economic, and security challenges.
“I emphasized the importance of genuine national ownership of this inclusive process that seeks to unify institutions, preserve stability, restore legitimacy of institutions towards state-building, and builds upon Libyan legal frameworks,” Koury stated.
“I also outlined the ongoing preparations for the Advisory Committee that will be tasked to study and propose options to overcome the impediments for the holding of elections, including contentious issues in the electoral laws,” she added.
“Participants raised concerns over the status quo and the prospect of further divisions in the country. Furthermore, they expressed deep concern regarding corruption, the shrinking civic space, human rights violations, restrictions on press freedoms, and emphasized the need for a permanent constitution,” according to UN envoy.
