UN Security Council extends Operation IRINI for another year

The United Nations Security Council has adopted Resolution 2635 which allows for a 12-month extension of the European Union’s Operation IRINI, which was established to enforce the UN-imposed arms embargo on Libya.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, welcomed the Security Council’s decision on Friday.

“This reflects the recognition of [Operation IRINI’s] contribution to restoring peace & stability in Libya,” Borrell said via Twitter. “EU is the only international actor inspecting suspect vessels to prevent arms flows to the country.”
