Tripoli – The Central Tripoli Municipality expressed deep sorrow and profound regret. This was for a tragic incident. A house collapsed in the Old City area. A mother and her two daughters died.
The municipality held the competent authorities fully responsible for this matter. It condemned the ongoing restriction of municipal councils’ powers. This limits their role. It renders them unable to intervene effectively. They cannot address issues directly affecting citizens’ safety and lives.
The municipality stated it had previously identified dilapidated buildings. It prepared technical proposals and solutions for their repair. These were referred to the relevant specialized authorities. However, a lack of authority prevented action. Delays in necessary procedures also occurred. These issues prevented the solutions from being implemented on the ground.
The municipal council affirmed that building safety and protecting lives are a top priority. The right of citizens to safe housing is fundamental. This right cannot be compromised. It cannot be negotiated.
