Tehran – The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced Saturday it had targeted U.S. military positions in the region in response to a new American strike against Iran. The Guard did not specify which U.S. sites were attacked.
The statement followed an earlier report by the semi-official ISNA news agency that cited the Revolutionary Guard as saying its response to any new American aggression against Iran would be “swift and decisive.” ISNA deleted that statement later.
The U.S. military had launched airstrikes against Iranian targets after President Donald Trump accused Iran of a “foolish violation” of the truce following a drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz. No injuries were reported after the attack, which involved a single one-way attack drone on Thursday. The incident prompted the evacuation of more than 11,000 sailors from the area.
In response, U.S. Central Command said Friday it had targeted facilities for storing missiles and drones, as well as coastal radar sites.
Moments before the airstrikes were announced, Trump said “you will see” in answer to a question about whether the United States would retaliate against the Iranian attack.
Trump said Friday that Iran had launched at least four one-way attack drones toward ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. He confirmed that one of the drones struck the deck of a large cargo ship, causing material damage but not stopping its voyage.
Trump also wrote on “Truth Social” that U.S. forces shot down three other drones. He described the attacks as a “flagrant violation” of the ceasefire agreement.
