Saeed Amghaib is a member of the House of Representatives. He stated that the Libyan political scene has clearly accelerated. This acceleration occurred over the past two weeks.
However, Amghaib believes current proposals are “for local consumption.” He said they do not represent a serious attempt to reach elections. This applies to the UN mission led by Bathily. It also applies to what he called “partners of the homeland” in Tripoli. These partners are allied with Abdul Hamid Dbeibah. Dbeibah is the head of the Government of National Unity. Amghaib claims they obstruct genuine efforts. These efforts aim to resolve the political stalemate. They also aim to hold elections. He made these remarks to “Libya Al-Hadath” channel. Al-Marsad newspaper monitored his statement.
Amghaib clarified his views on the Western region. He sees no genuine popular anger there. He pointed out that Tripoli residents want Dbeibah. They desire a unified nation. They also want life to continue normally. Additionally, they seek a lower dinar exchange rate. He affirmed that these demands are unachievable. This is due to a government he labeled as corrupt. Amghaib considers “all obstacles” to stem from the Dbeibah government.
Amghaib added that popular anger has not yet led to overthrowing the Dbeibah government. He said all Libyans attest to the government’s corruption. It has committed “obstruction and crimes.” These affect the people’s resources and Libyan sovereignty. Yet, it has not faced genuine popular anger.
Amghaib also addressed recent demonstrations in the country. He believes a state sought to instigate them. This was to achieve specific gains. However, that state failed to achieve those gains.
Amghaib discussed the political committee. He understands it as an initiative from Speaker Aguila Saleh. He affirmed that Saleh consistently proposes initiatives. These are “without overstepping or bias.” Saleh offers concession after concession. This is to achieve elections and stability. It is also to unite the government. Members of the House of Representatives approved these concessions.
Despite this, Amghaib did not accept the current initiative. He believes it will not yield results. This is due to existing obstacles. Neither the UN mission nor Dbeibah will approve it. The entities he controls in western Libya also will not. Moreover, transparent elections cannot be guaranteed. This is true under a government that controls key state institutions in Tripoli.
Amghaib shared his personal opinion. He stated Libya “will not be one” since 2011. This is due to international intervention. He believes Libya is “complex.” He thinks the world is working with this complexity. He does not believe the world will allow a single government. He also doubts it will allow elections.
He noted the House of Representatives proposed restoring the High National Elections Commission (HNEC). They suggested keeping Emad Al-Sayah. This includes completing the commission’s members. However, the High Council of State opposed this idea. Amghaib believes this clarifies for Libyans which party obstructs political settlements. It also obstructs elections.
Amghaib concluded his statement. He said the Libyan people remain content with the status quo. They have not demanded federalism or autonomy. They also have not called for a unified state. They have not demanded Dbeibah’s departure. He believes no genuine external solutions exist for the country’s stability. Only the Libyan people can preserve their nation’s unity. This is if they choose to do so.
