Ali Abouezza is a member of the Bakers’ Union. He warned of the continuous rise in essential bread-making ingredient prices. He confirmed these increases would directly affect citizens. He made these remarks to Libya Al-Ahrar channel. The channel broadcasts from Turkey with Qatari funding.
Flour, Sugar, and Oil Prices Jump.
Abouezza explained the price increases. Flour rose to 240 dinars from 190 dinars. A bag of sugar jumped from 160 to 220 dinars. A box of oil also increased to 137 dinars from 90 dinars.
Yeast, Bags, and Enhancer Also See Increases.
He noted that other bread-making supplies also increased. A box of yeast reached 200 dinars, up from 180 dinars. Bread bag prices rose from 190 to 350 dinars. The price of bread enhancer increased by 120 dinars per box.
Weak Oversight and Black Market Pricing.
Abouezza confirmed citizens would bear these rising costs. This comes amid declining purchasing power and increased prices. He pointed out that essential materials enter via documentary credits. However, they are sold in the market at black market prices. This reflects a lack of price control.
Additional Pressures on Bakery Owners.
Abouezza concluded by stating bakery owners face growing pressure. Workers are demanding higher wages after the exchange rate change. He called for the activation of the Grains Board. This would regulate the flour market and stabilize prices.
