New York – Brazil has exited the 2026 World Cup in the round of 16 after a 2-1 defeat to Norway on Monday morning at MetLife Stadium in New York City.
In the first half, Brazil missed a chance to take the lead when Bruno Guimarães failed to convert a penalty. Norway controlled much of the play during this period.
In the second half, Norwegian star Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 79th minute and added a second goal in the 90th, putting Norway on the verge of reaching the quarterfinals. Deep into stoppage time, Brazil earned a second penalty, which substitute Neymar converted, reducing the deficit.
However, the late goal was not enough to prevent Brazil’s elimination. With this victory, Norway advances to the quarterfinals and will face the winner of the upcoming Mexico vs. England match.
