Benghazi – The Anti-Corruption Prosecution ordered the detention of a director. This director heads the Historic Cities Management Authority branch in the municipality. The order falls under the jurisdiction of the Benghazi Court of Appeal. The detention relates to ongoing investigations. These investigations involve cases of administrative and financial corruption.
The Attorney General’s Office issued a statement today, Saturday. It clarified the prosecution’s decision to detain the accused. The decision followed an examination of a lease contract. The contract involved a three-hectare area. This area is part of the vegetable market in Benghazi municipality. The examination revealed the accused misused his official powers.
Investigations uncovered further details. The official deliberately allowed a contractor to gain an unfair advantage. The contractor received 75% of the market’s management revenue. This arrangement lasted for six years. The lease contract also included an automatic renewal clause. These renewal terms were similarly unjust. Furthermore, the contractor was not required to ensure efficient public service.
The office added that these actions harmed public funds. They also damaged the public interest. The actions provided material benefits to other parties. This violated existing legislation. Therefore, the investigative authority ordered the accused’s precautionary detention.
