Benghazi – The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, received the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ms. Hanna Tetteh, and her accompanying delegation today at his office in the General Command headquarters in Benghazi. The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Commander-in-Chief, Lieutenant General Saddam Khalifa. This meeting comes within the framework of ongoing efforts to advance the political process in the country and address recent security tensions.

The discussions focused primarily on the roadmap presented by the UN mission during its briefing to the UN Security Council on August 21, 2025. The two sides discussed mechanisms to support a peaceful path for the political process, aiming to hold the long-awaited presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya. The UN roadmap includes three main pillars: establishing a viable constitutional and legal framework for elections, unifying Libyan institutions under a single government, and launching a comprehensive national dialogue.
The security situation in the capital, Tripoli, was also a central focus of the talks. Both parties explored ways to prevent the escalation of tensions and avoid any military build-up that could threaten the city’s security and stability. The meeting stressed the necessity of protecting the safety of residents and public and private facilities in Tripoli, in light of the recent military mobilizations and intermittent clashes the capital has witnessed.
This meeting comes at a critical time, with growing fears of the situation sliding into a new conflict, amidst local and international calls for all parties to exercise restraint and return to the dialogue table. UNSMIL continues its efforts to mediate between the Libyan factions with the goal of reaching a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the country’s crisis.
