Flights between Libya’s east and west suspended to obstruct new government, source

Domestic flights between parts of the eastern and western regions of Libya were suspended to prevent the new government, led by Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha, from taking office in Tripoli, a source told The Libya Update.

The source, which requested anonymity for safety concerns, said the suspension happened in conjunction with the arrival of several armed groups to the capital upon orders from outgoing Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh who refuses to leave office.

In a press statement on Friday, Dbeinbeh’s spokesman, Mohammed Hammouda, claimed that the government suspended flights between Tripoli and several eastern cities after receiving reports “drones flying in low-range in the airspace of Mitiga Airport”. However, international flights at the airport continue to operate normally without any suspension or obstruction.
