Abuja – The death toll has risen to 162 fatalities. This is according to the Red Cross. The armed attack targeted Wuru village in Kwara State, central-western Nigeria. It occurred late Tuesday evening.
Babaomou Ayodeji is the Secretary of the Red Cross branch in Kwara State. He stated that rescue teams are still searching. They are operating around the village and neighboring areas. He noted the death toll is likely to increase. More bodies are expected to be found. Initial estimates reported only 67 fatalities.
This attack is one of the deadliest in Nigeria in recent months. Armed groups have noticeably escalated their activity. They are gradually expanding their influence. This expansion is from the northwest towards the center and south of the country.
Many residents remain missing. Fears are growing of a higher death toll. Search operations continue in the rugged areas surrounding the village.
