Paris – France and the African Union Commission reaffirmed their commitment. They committed to Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity. They emphasized the priority of a political solution to the crisis. Both parties called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
These statements were made during the third Strategic Dialogue session. It took place between the African Union Commission and France. The dialogue was held in Paris. French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot participated. Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssef also attended. This information is according to a French Foreign Ministry statement.
Both parties emphasized strengthening global governance. This governance must be based on international law. It should also operate within a framework of inclusiveness, responsibility, and solidarity. They reaffirmed their commitment to comprehensive multilateral system reform. This reform aims to enhance representation, effectiveness, and legitimacy.
In this context, both sides highlighted the urgent need for UN Security Council reform. The Council must become more representative and effective. This aligns with common African positions. Specifically, it refers to the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration. They noted that the anticipated African reform model presentation in New York could boost diplomatic momentum. This momentum would move towards achieving this goal.
Both parties also affirmed Africa’s importance in international forums. This includes the G20 and France’s G7 presidency. They also advocated for reforming the international financial structure. This reform would support financing and debt treatment. It would also fund development and economic transformation. Environmental transformation on the continent is also a focus. This aligns with Agenda 2063 and the Charter for Prosperity.
Both sides expressed concern about ongoing regional crises in Africa. This includes the situation in the Great Lakes region. They reaffirmed support for a political solution there. This solution must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They also stressed the importance of facilitating humanitarian aid access. Resuming flights to and from Goma airport is especially crucial.
They also emphasized supporting Somalia’s stability. This is crucial for Red Sea security. It also supports freedom of navigation. This support is vital given the increasing challenges to international trade flows.
Both parties expressed concern over rising terrorism threats. They also noted violent extremism across the continent. They stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach. This approach must combine security, political, economic, and social solutions. They also expressed solidarity with victims of terrorism. This is particularly true in the African Sahel region.
