Rome – Several earthquakes struck Italian islands in the Mediterranean Sea early today. There were no immediate reports of human or material losses from the tremors. The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported an earthquake.
It had a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale. The quake occurred at a depth of 29 kilometers. It was near the Aeolian Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea. This is off the northern coast of Sicily. Another 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck a nearby area three minutes later.
The Italian news agency ANSA stated the 4.3 magnitude tremor was felt. Residents of Palermo, Sicily, felt it. The Reggio Calabria region in mainland Italy also felt it. Several weaker tremors occurred afterward.
