Nicosia – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on NATO members to maintain the alliance’s cohesion and unity. Her remarks follow media reports regarding potential US punitive measures against Spain. These measures stem from Spain’s refusal to support the American-Israeli war against Iran.
Meloni spoke during the EU summit in Cyprus. She stated that NATO must maintain unity as its source of strength. She also emphasized the need to strengthen Europe’s security role through a “European pillar” within the alliance.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated he is not concerned about reports of US discussions. These discussions allegedly involve suspending Spain’s NATO participation as a retaliatory measure.
Spain previously ruled out participation in military missions in the Strait of Hormuz. The Spanish government emphasized that international action should prioritize stopping the war and preventing escalation. It stressed that the EU position must focus on ending the conflict regardless of economic considerations.
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized certain NATO members. He accused them of failing to provide sufficient support in the war. He characterized this as a failure to meet alliance obligations.
The founding NATO treaty does not include any provision for suspending or excluding a member.
