Benghazi – The phenomenon of divorce in society represents a growing challenge. It carries multiple causes and complex social and economic repercussions. Ongoing efforts aim to reduce divorce through awareness and family reform. Abduljalil Saleh Al-Fazani, Director of Al-Yusr Charitable Foundation, confirmed the foundation provides practical solutions. Its initiatives have significantly supported family stability and cohesion.
Al-Fazani explained that Al-Yusr Foundation started in early February 2011. It initially focused on supply and relief work. The foundation received official registration from the Ministry of Culture and Civil Society on December 2, 2012. It later specialized in social issues with a focus on divorce. The foundation adopted practical visions to stabilize Libyan families. It aims to expand organized and sustainable social work across vital fields.
Al-Fazani noted the foundation developed a comprehensive strategy for awareness programs. A key highlight was establishing the Al-Yusr Academy for Family Awareness and Consultation. The academy trains engaged couples in religious, health, social, psychological, and economic aspects. A government decree now requires young people to attend these courses before marriage. The foundation also organized Libya’s first scientific conference on divorce. The conference was held under the slogan “Together to Build a Cohesive and Happy Family.” The University of Benghazi provided scientific supervision with wide participation from various universities.
Foundation studies showed that housing and economic conditions cause 62% of divorces. Family-shared housing is a particularly significant factor. These indicators reflect realistic challenges facing Libyan families. The foundation addressed the House of Representatives to activate Law No. 4 of 2010 regarding reconciliation and arbitration. They requested adding social and psychological experts to reconciliation committees. Al-Fazani also mentioned a proposed polygamy law. This follows a 37% rise in delayed marriage due to wars and instability.
The foundation launched campaigns and workshops to raise awareness about the risks of underage marriage. These marriages negatively impact family and social stability. Work is also underway on the Benghazi Social Forum project to reduce dowries. Al-Fazani emphasized the importance of the “No to Divorce, Yes to Building a Happy Family” campaign in educational institutions. These efforts rely on religious values and Quranic teachings regarding marriage and affection.
The Director concluded that these efforts represent a practical model for addressing divorce. This is achieved through awareness, reform, and community support. These initiatives contribute to stabilizing Libyan families and strengthening religious values. They aim to build a cohesive society capable of facing modern challenges.
