A sports report published by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) examined Libya’s participation in Group C of the Afrobasket 2025 tournament in Angola.
Libya suffered its second consecutive loss to South Sudan after losing to South Sudan by a heavy score of 115 to 52 points, with Nassim Badroush being the only player to break the ten-point barrier with 17 points.
Early advantage and performance difficultiesSouth Sudan jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead within the first three minutes, prompting American coach Sam Vincent to call a timeout, but the gap continued to widen and the first quarter ended 31-12, with the Libyans struggling to keep up with the opponent’s pace and committing 7 fouls in this quarter alone.
Libya failed to capitalise on 12 out of 24 free throws, while the opposition capitalised on the Libyan players’ mistakes to add 32 points from 21 fouls. South Sudan’s reserves outscored their Libyan counterparts 32-9, highlighting the clear difference in depth between the two teams.
The report noted that these results came as a surprise given Libya’s good performance in qualifying, but the team failed to match South Sudan’s physicality and attacking prowess, scoring only 11 successful hits out of 49 long-range attempts.
The report concludes by pointing out that Libya recorded its lowest points tally in a single match in the tournament, and after two consecutive losses, its chances of reaching the quarter-finals look very slim.
