Breses – Deep cracks and fissures have appeared in the Breses region. This has drawn the attention of residents and authorities. The Libyan government’s Ministry of Environment confirmed the phenomenon is natural. It was caused by recent heavy floods and intense rainfall.
Fares Fathi is the Director of the ministry’s Department of Geographical and Environmental Systems. He stated that rapid surface runoff eroded the fragile red soil, forming gullies. This is a common phenomenon in dry and semi-arid environments.
Fathi added that surface water seeped through the cracks into deeper layers. This helped replenish the aquifer and improve underground water reserves. He stressed the importance of taking precautionary measures around the gully site. He also urged for monitoring adjacent areas to avoid any future risks.
