Benghazi – Laila Al-Awjali is the Director of the Department of Elderly, Aged, and Disabled at the Ministry of Social Affairs. She affirmed that 2026 presents a significant opportunity. This opportunity is to enhance the role of women with disabilities in Libya. It is also an opportunity to transition from traditional social care. The goal is political empowerment. This includes active participation in public life and decision-making.
Al-Awjali spoke on the occasion of International Women’s Day, March 8. She explained that women with disabilities possess academic and professional capabilities. These capabilities qualify them for leadership roles. This applies to various fields. It includes political representation and national decision-making.
She emphasized the importance of intensifying dialogue sessions. Scientific seminars are also crucial. These efforts aim to enhance the presence of women with disabilities in the political sphere. She considers this presence to be more than a social demand. It is a national right. It reflects the principle of full citizenship. It also reflects equal participation in building a modern state.
She confirmed that the Department of Elderly, Aged, and Disabled will support dialogue platforms this year. It will also support intellectual platforms. These platforms promote a culture of active citizenship. They open opportunities for women with disabilities. The goal is for them to be genuine partners in decision-making. They should not merely be recipients of services. She stressed that the strength of the modern Libyan state. It lies in investing all its human capacities without exception.
