Rome – Mount Etna, located on the Italian island of Sicily, has continued its volcanic activity for the seventh consecutive day. Ash and lava are erupting from the Voragine crater near the volcano’s summit.
Local sources said Thursday that the volcanic activity has persisted since a fissure formed in the crater at an altitude of about 3,000 meters on June 26. The fissure has produced varying ash emissions, along with lava flows visible on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna.
In response to the ongoing activity, the Catania branch of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology raised the aviation alert to the orange level. However, the institute clarified that air traffic at Catania Fontanarossa Airport, which is near the volcano, has not been affected by the ash and lava emissions so far.
Mount Etna, which stands at about 3,300 meters, is the highest active volcano in Europe and frequently experiences volcanic activity throughout the year.
