Libya’s National Army General Command’s media bureau has confirmed that two shipping containers containing over 15 million narcotic pills (pregabalin type) were seized at the Benghazi seaport in a coordinated operation.
Military units and specialist security agencies conducted the drug bust in cooperation between land forces operations, the customs department, and in the presence of the public prosecutor, the media bureau announced in a post on its Facebook page on Saturday.
The bureau said the seizure followed intelligence gathering and investigation into the smuggling of a large quantity of narcotics into the port. The shipment was subsequently destroyed.
In October last year, a separate shipment containing 15 million narcotic pills (lyrica type) was seized at the customs center in Benghazi port.
Late December also saw the arrest of a judicial seizure officer accused of taking bribes to enable the entry of 208,600 narcotic pills without customs screening.
