The head of Libya’s High National Elections Commission HNEC, Emad al-Sayeh, briefed parliament speaker Aguila Saleh on the technical readiness to open voter registration in the coming days, during a meeting in Quba city on Saturday.
Al-Sayeh outlined the executive plans the commission has put in place to ensure the upcoming municipal council elections are held to the “highest standards of integrity,” according to a statement from parliament.
Elections Commission member Abdelhakim al-Shaib also attended, as they discussed the latest updates on the electoral process and the commission’s preparations to hold the municipal elections.
The statement quoted Saleh affirming his “full support for the upcoming elections,” praising efforts made by the commission to deliver these “national entitlements.”
Elections for municipal councils across 98 cities and towns are scheduled to be held this year, with citizens currently able to register to vote using their phone numbers.
Requirements to register include residing in the specific municipality holding elections and having a national ID number linked to the phone number.
