Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio spoke on the phone with his American counterpart Antony Blinken to discuss a number of international issues including the elections in Libya, the Italian foreign ministry said on Friday.
France, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the U.S. “stand ready to hold to account those who threaten the stability or undermine the political and electoral process in Libya, through violence, or the incitement of violence,” according to a joint statement released Friday by the five countries.
Italy is strengthening its presence at the Misurata Airbase in western Libya, where satellite images showed new constructions at the Italian military section of the Base.

Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush met on Wednesday with her Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio in Rome where they discussed “bilateral cooperation, political process and elections and cooperation with U.N. Special Advisor, Stephanie Williams,” according to a statement by the Italian foreign ministry.
Libya’s Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush is today in Rome where she is invited to speak at a conference on “New Geopolitical Scenarios in the Mediterranean”, which is hosted by the the University of Rome, according to an announcement on the university’s website.
“‘I believe that the elections in Libya are necessary,” said Josep Borrell, the E.U. Representatives for Foreign Affairs, while speaking yesterday at the conference of Med Dialogues promoted by the Italian foreign ministry in Rome.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, evacuated on Thursday 93 asylum seekers to Italy from Libya, “where they had been living in precarious situations with an uncertain future,” according to UNHCR.
