Tripoli – The National Council for General Liberties and Human Rights stated that human rights in Libya face significant and deep challenges. These challenges require a doubling of national efforts. The Council considers current measures and mechanisms insufficient to achieve the desired human rights transformation.
In a statement on Wednesday for World Human Rights Day, the Council said promoting human rights requires constant cooperation. This coordination is needed between legislative, judicial, and executive authorities. Additionally, civil society institutions must play an active role. This includes spreading a culture of rights and accountability. It also means enhancing community participation in human rights management.
The statement stressed the necessity of guaranteeing rights for victims of torture, enforced disappearance, and human trafficking. Perpetrators of serious violations must not escape accountability. This especially applies to those who committed crimes related to mass graves and enforced disappearances. The statement emphasized the importance of pursuing these cases. It called for bringing perpetrators to justice according to national and international standards.
The Council added that the human rights situation continues to face great complexities. This is true at the national, regional, and international levels. Establishing a human rights culture in society requires a comprehensive vision and effective tools. This begins with securing basic human needs like food, education, health, and employment. Social guarantees are also essential. This approach strengthens society’s resilience and its ability to confront violations.
