The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, yesterday discussed with Deputy Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council Abdullah Al-Lafi the latest developments in the situation in Libya, in particular the elections and national reconciliation, and the results of the 5+5 Joint Military Committee meetings held on July 16-18 in the French capital, Paris.
According to a statement by the council, Bathily reiterated during the meeting “the continued support for the efforts of the Presidential Council, which aim to make the national reconciliation project a success, in coordination with the specialized experts of the United Nations mission to contribute to the success of this dossier”.
Bathily reportedly praised the announcement of the start of the work of the Preparatory Committee, held in the past two days in the Congolese capital, Brazzaville, which will pave the way for the convening of the inclusive conference with the broad participation of the Libyan people.
The UN envoy also briefed Al-Lafi on his recent meetings with Libyan parties with the aim of achieving stability and holding elections, the results of which are agreed by all parties.
In turn, Al-Lafi said that restoring trust between political parties is “a key factor for the success of the political process, in addition to laws and legislation”. which will pave the way for the convening of the inclusive conference with the broad participation of the Libyan people.
