The 5+5 Joint Military Committee hopes that a new Libyan government, under the leadership of Prime Minister-designate Fathi Bashagha, would be able to unify the country’s military and disarm the militias, a committee member told the press on Monday.
Speaking to Russian news agency Sputnik, Lieutenant-General Faraj Al-Sawsa’a expressed the committee’s dissatisfaction with the performance of the the incumbent premier Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, who failed to take any steps regarding these issues, according to Al-Sawsa’a.
“Without disarming the militias, elections cannot be held and stability in Tripoli cannot be achieved,” he said. “The [incumbent] government has not taken any positive step regarding the plan to disarm the militias, but rather it is under the control of the militias.”
The Lieutenant-General called on Bashagha’s government to coordinate with the committee to achieve these goals.
