Seoul – A South Korean court sentenced former President Yoon Suk-yeol to five years in prison. He was convicted in one of eight criminal cases he faces. The conviction relates to his controversial decree. This decree declared martial law in late 2024.
The court, which convened today, Friday, found Yoon guilty of obstructing authorities. He obstructed the execution of an arrest warrant against him. This included resisting authorities during his attempted arrest.
Yoon was impeached in April. He faces a series of criminal trials. These trials stem from his imposition of martial law. Other scandals from his presidency are also involved. The most serious case is a charge of “leading an armed rebellion.” This crime carries a maximum penalty of death under the law.
