Al-Bayda – The Agricultural Research Center achieved significant milestones in agricultural scientific research during 2025. The center affirmed its vital role in supporting national food security. It also addressed climate change challenges. This was despite limited financial constraints on research and development.
Shaikha Salam is the center’s media director. She told the Libyan News Agency that scientific research is no longer an intellectual luxury. It has become the first line of defense against environmental challenges. It also addresses water resource scarcity. The center’s programs focused on studying crop behavior under high temperatures. They also aimed to improve the productivity of strategic grains like wheat and barley. Another focus was developing drought and disease-resistant strains.
Specialized training courses were organized. These focused on smart and innovative irrigation systems. The “Saqiya” application was included. These courses targeted farmers and researchers. Research was conducted to develop plant and animal production. Natural resources maintenance was also a focus. Economic and social studies were carried out. International cooperation was strengthened. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and modern technologies were used. This helped predict agricultural pests and study pesticides.
According to Salam, the center achieved notable results in developing wheat and barley crops. A new soft wheat variety, “Wheat Buhuth 210,” was released. A new barley variety, “Misratah 4,” was also released. Both varieties offer high productivity. They also show good disease resistance. Furthermore, they have low water requirements. In cooperation with the Grain Production and Multiplication Authority, 138.5 tons of these seeds were distributed. This covered an estimated area of 1000 hectares. This initiative boosts food security. It also supports the national economy.
Center researchers submitted 35 research proposals in 2025. They also completed several preventive and field strategies and studies. One key proposal is the updated Agricultural Research Center Strategy 2026. It aims to align research programs with future climatic and economic challenges. It also seeks to link scientific research with agricultural development needs. Another proposal is the integrated National Firefighting Strategy. This involves unifying efforts among relevant bodies. It also focuses on protecting vegetation in areas like Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar. Digital maps will be prepared to identify vulnerable areas. Early warning systems will be developed.
A study on the almond stem borer pest (Capnodis tenebrionis) was also included. It involved monitoring infestation hotspots in Al-Haniya and Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar. The most affected peach and almond trees were identified. Proposals also included a study on the pine processionary moth pest. This aimed to assess its spread in mountain forests. It also sought to develop scientific recommendations for prevention and control.
In conclusion, Shaikha Salam affirmed these efforts. They reinforce the center’s institutional and national role. They also underscore the importance of scientific research in achieving food security. Agricultural sustainability is another key goal. This is being pursued despite financial and administrative challenges facing the sector.
