Political analyst Hussam al-Abdali stated that the political stalemate and deadlock continue. There are no real indicators of upcoming solutions. This has worsened economic conditions. It directly impacted citizens’ lives.
Al-Abdali told Sputnik agency that Libyans were anticipating UN mission movements. They also awaited results from the announced roadmap. This roadmap included several paths. These paths involved the possible restructuring of the High National Elections Commission. It also aimed to amend electoral laws. The ultimate goal was holding elections.
He added that the mission adopted a “structured dialogue.” Its recommendations would be non-binding. Al-Abdali believes this makes it largely similar to the advisory committee. The mission had launched that committee previously.
Al-Abdali questioned the UN mission’s current approach. Is it repeating the same old method? Or is it indirectly prolonging the crisis? He noted the advisory committee had already offered proposals. However, the new dialogue’s outcomes will not be binding. This raises questions about these paths’ effectiveness. It also questions their ability to achieve real political progress.
Al-Abdali indicated Libyans hoped for a Libyan-Libyan solution. Such a solution would end the division. He does not expect consensus between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State. Political disagreements persist. He affirmed that this ongoing situation casts a shadow over the economy. It increases citizen suffering due to rising prices. Purchasing power has declined.
He added that the current political crisis clearly impacted living conditions. Citizens suffer from low wages. They also face high living costs. Meeting basic needs is very difficult. He described the economic situation as “highly complex.” It requires urgent and radical solutions.
Al-Abdali emphasized that Libyan public mobilization could pressure political bodies. This could make them reconsider their positions. He stressed the importance of Libyan unity. He also urged avoiding divisions. Collective action is needed to demand solutions. These solutions should end the political crisis.
Al-Abdali believes the UN envoy’s Security Council briefing offered nothing new. It did not meet Libyan aspirations. He noted the mission’s role was pivotal in previous stages. However, the current phase demands a comprehensive review of the political path. This review should ensure real progress towards stability. It should also ensure the holding of elections.
