Al-Bayda – Mayor Khaled Al-Awami has announced urgent official actions to find a new landfill site. The current landfill is now within a residential area due to urban expansion. This poses serious health and environmental risks to the population.
The announcement followed an expanded meeting held last Saturday. Representatives from specialized agencies attended. They discussed the necessary technical and health standards for the new location.
Attendees included the committee head, the director of the Al-Bayda Municipal Guard, and the coordinator for the Agriculture and Livestock Sector. Also present were the directors of the Urban Planning Office, the General Company for Cleaning Services, and the General Environment Authority. The head of the Agricultural Police, consultant Boubaker Al-Jali, and the director of the Environmental Sanitation Department also attended.
Al-Awami stated that the meeting discussed the consequences of the current landfill’s location within the city. This causes environmental pollution and harms public health.
He emphasized that selecting the new site will follow strict technical conditions. This will prevent any negative impact on residents or the surrounding environment.
The mayor praised directives from General Saddam Haftar. The directives call for the immediate closure of the current landfill. They also order urgent action to find an alternative site meeting technical and health standards.
He considered this a “pivotal” step in tackling one of the city’s key service challenges. He stressed the need for swift implementation and adherence to legal procedures.
Al-Awami explained the meeting reviewed all requirements for the new site. These include waste sorting and treatment mechanisms. They also cover pollution prevention measures and safety standards for workers and residents.
He noted an agreement on a clear action plan. The project will be implemented on a set schedule. The meeting minutes and recommendations will be forwarded to the competent authority.
The Al-Bayda mayor affirmed the municipality’s commitment to implementing local and international environmental and health standards. This will be done in coordination with relevant bodies. The goal is to establish a model landfill that improves cleaning services and protects the environment and public health.
