The Foreign Minister of the Libyan government, Abdul Hadi Al-Hweij, said the delay in opening the Russian consulate in Benghazi is due to administrative and bureaucratic procedures. He denied any political dimensions behind the delay.
In a statement to RIA Novosti, Al-Hweij explained the consulate’s opening in Benghazi is not an act of hostility towards Tripoli. It will enhance political, economic, and cultural cooperation between Libya and Russia. He emphasized that the relationship between the two countries is historic. He added it is not limited to the military aspect, contrary to rumors.
Al-Hweij noted that efforts are underway to open a “Russian House” in Benghazi to promote Russian culture and language. Corresponding work is being done to open a Libyan cultural house in Moscow. He also stated that Libya is currently focusing on renewable energy and does not prioritize peaceful nuclear energy.
