Benghazi – House of Representatives member Sarah Al-Suwaih has called for the adoption of the draft constitution through a popular referendum before proceeding with presidential and parliamentary elections.
In a statement to the Libyan News Agency, Al-Suwaih considered this to be “the easiest and most immediate step to lay a sound legal foundation for building the desired state.”
Al-Suwaih explained that the current political scene has reached a dismal state that requires a package of urgent reforms, chief among them the referendum on the draft constitution, followed by holding elections and forming a unified executive authority capable of managing the next phase.
She added that addressing the current situation also requires comprehensive economic reform, developing the administrative system, and unifying the military institution in accordance with existing legislation.
She concluded by stressing that fulfilling these requirements is a necessary path to end the political stalemate and realize the aspirations of Libyans for security, stability, and development.
