Benghazi – The Deputy Head of the House of Representatives’ Diwan, Dr. Rasmi Bel-Ruwain, participated in the sixth expert roundtable on the Common Principles for Support to Parliaments. The event was organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Its theme was “Strengthening parliamentary development through gender equality.”
Speaking via a live video conference, Dr. Bel-Ruwain affirmed that violence against women is rejected in Libya. It is protected against by law and society. He noted that women in Libya enjoy professional and financial rights equal to men. They have a prominent presence in political, academic, and administrative fields. He stated this reflects a tangible reality, not just a slogan.
He stressed the need to consider the cultures and beliefs of peoples when discussing equality in international forums. He called for adopting values that ensure a dignified life for both men and women without overstating or neglecting rights.
The Common Principles for Support to Parliaments are a set of foundations that guide parliamentary development. They enhance the efficiency of parliaments and their ability to achieve balance and justice.
