Saleh Boumbarka is the Director of the Animal Wealth Department in Al-Bayda, Al-Jabal al-Akhdar Municipality. He warned of an unprecedented rise in meat and poultry prices. This comes with the approach of Eid al-Adha. He noted that local markets face significant pressure. This is due to a lack of oversight on slaughterhouses and butchers. Boumbarka made these statements in exclusive remarks to the Libyan News Agency (WAL).
Boumbarka explained the price increases. Poultry prices rose from 18 dinars last year to 35 dinars currently. Red meat prices exceeded 100 dinars. The price of sacrificial animals, especially five-month-old lambs, registered over 2000 dinars. He considered these levels a heavy burden on citizens.
He pointed out that markets face dual challenges. These include the drying up of wells. Farms are also empty of wheat and barley crops after Storm Daniel. Furthermore, farm rental costs increased from 20,000 to 80,000 dinars. He also highlighted the impact of Newcastle disease on the poultry sector. The price of chicks rose from 4 dinars to 11 dinars. This exacerbated pressure on breeders. It also increased production costs.
Boumbarka appealed to the government and the General Command of the Armed Forces. He urged urgent intervention to provide subsidized fodder. He affirmed that this step is essential to alleviate the burden on citizens. It is also crucial for protecting animal wealth in affected areas.
