Egyptian officials were “shocked” that Libyan delegates accompanying Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh recorded a private meeting between Libyan premier and his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly, a source reportedly told Libyan news website Al-Enwan.
In the audio recording, which was leaked online, Dbeibeh can be heard discussing a Kuwaiti company’s lawsuit against Libya, which has been handled by Egyptian courts.
During his private meeting with Madbouly, Dbeibeh called on the Egyptian court to reconsider in its latest ruling in the case.
After the recording was leaked online, an Egyptian official source told Al-Enwan found the incident “completely unacceptable”, and described at as a “violation of diplomatic protocols”. The Egyptian source accused the Libyan government of deliberately leaking the audio recording to use it as a “public opinion assist” for Dbeibeh.
Following the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime, Kuwait’s Kharafi company filed a lawsuit against Libya to seek damages for Gaddafi’s cancelling of the construction of a vacation resort.
In 2020, the Cairo Court of Appeal made a ruling to annul the arbitration case made by Kharafi company. However, in late June this year, the Egyptian Court of Cassation overturned the ruling of the Cairo Court of Appeal regarding the dispute.
