Sebha – Youssef Al-Aqouri chairs the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee. He stated that climate change is a significant and dangerous issue for southern Libya. It has major economic, social, and environmental impacts. He emphasized the need for a suitable national response. This response should rely on consultations with experts, researchers, and specialists from the region.
His remarks came during a workshop launch in Sebha yesterday. The workshop focused on climate challenges in southern Libya. Its title was “Promoting Sustainable Adaptation to Climate Change in Southern Libya.” It employed an integrated approach linking water, energy, food, and ecosystems. The House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee organized it.
Al-Aqouri clarified that the committee is keen to utilize international expertise. They also seek technical support to assist the people of the south. He added that the workshop is part of the committee’s international cooperation strategy.
Wael Al-Ashaibi, the workshop’s supervisor, stated that the event is part of the Green Sustainability Initiative. The House of Representatives launched this initiative. It aims to enhance work on environmental and climate change issues. He noted that activities, workshops, and seminars would continue in the south. They will cover all related topics. They will also identify local needs.
Al-Ashaibi added that the workshop aims to hear participants’ views. It also seeks to develop appropriate local recommendations and solutions. This will contribute to reviewing government policies. It will also help propose suitable legislative reforms.
The workshop activities will continue for two days. Several experts and researchers from the south are participating. They will provide an integrated vision for confronting the effects of climate change.
