UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued an urgent appeal. He addressed all political and military parties in Libya. Guterres demanded their immediate and serious engagement in a comprehensive peaceful path. This path should resolve the ongoing crisis. It must also prevent Libya from slipping into new rounds of armed conflict.
Guterres made his statement during the opening of the 39th African Union Summit. The summit took place in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital. Libyan Presidential Council head Mohamed Al-Menfi participated in the event.
The summit’s agenda prominently featured discussions on conflict hotspots. These included areas in the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, and parts of Central Africa. This focus was due to ongoing threats from terrorist groups. It also addressed escalating internal conflicts.
